Papiamento Language of Aruba

Papiamento, the native tongue of Aruba, has emerged over the generations from a combination of  Spanish, Dutch,  Arawak Indian, Afro-Portuguese, French, and English. Although Dutch holds the title of Aruba’s official language, it is not the native tongue but Papiamento.

Papiamento, a language that is essentially Creole, is spoken by a relatively small number of people, almost exclusively in the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao, together known as the ABC Islands. Although only a small minority (less than 500,000) use Papiamento as their mother tongue, it is nonetheless the dialect used by the locals.

The vital aspect here is to give the due respect to Papiamento, the “mother tongue” of Aruba, and regard it in the same high esteem as other languages, not just as an enjoyable dialect, despite being a mash-up of several languages and despite Dutch serving as the government’s official language since the 17th century and English as the international language.
