The language is primarily spoken in the east and south and has some presence in northern and western parts of Afghanistan and became the national language in 1936. The language is also spoken in Pakistan by 15% of the population, mainly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan and parts of Iran. Pashto is influenced by the Persian language and has many loanwords from Urdu and due to the influence of Islam, the language has borrowed words from Arabic.
